StarScrappers: Orbital

In Orbital, each player takes turns building modules to their stations, playing event cards, and using their module abilities until their money runs out. Then the year ends, and players are awarded victory points for their achievements. Then they get more cards, more money, new crew members, and a new year starts. After 5 years, the player with the most victory points wins.

StarScrappers: Orbital is an upgraded version of our previous game, Space Station. It has been rethemed to be set in the StarScrappers universe, which is a series of games published by Hexy Studio in Poland. The rules have been streamlined, the cards balanced, and the graphics have been remade from scratch by Hexy’s talented graphic designers.

In Orbital, each player takes turns building modules to their stations, playing event cards, and using their module abilities until their money runs out. Then the year ends, and players are awarded victory points for their achievements. Then they get more cards, more money, new crew members, and a new year starts. It feels to me as a less random version of Galaxy Trucker. In Orbital you built a space station, but attacks and setbacks are caused by your adversary, not just by sheer bad luck. Solid thematic space game, that does not overstay its welcome, with rules that are not too overly complicated.

Initial first impressions with my 2 boys was positive. We all had fun and enjoyed it. Definitely a light game but has fun player interaction and i really like the theme of building your space station.

Orbital is a great game with very good mechanics (tableau building, worker placement, majority, and little bit of "take-that"). I played it with friends or with my kids (9 & 12 years old), and the rules are well explained and intuitive. The game is very fast-paced, as everyone takes a single action on his turn. It is also imperative to watch what the opponent is doing, because a situation reversal can be very fast. The interaction with other players is high, depending on your play style: you may also bluff and negociate to avoid agression. At the end, the final scores are often very tight. Overall, I really enjoyed every minute of each game session of Orbital I played. I prefer it to Terraforming Mars (from the same author).
